History of Vernon, NJ

Vernon Township is located in Sussex County, New Jersey, USA. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, and then by Dutch and English settlers in the 18th century. The township was incorporated in 1793 and named after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate.

During the 19th century, Vernon Township was primarily a farming community. In the early 20th century, the area became popular for its natural beauty and as a vacation destination for city-dwellers seeking fresh air and outdoor recreation.

In the 1960s, skiing became a popular activity in Vernon Township. The area's mountainous terrain and abundant snowfall made it an ideal location for ski resorts. Several resorts were established, including the popular Great Gorge Resort and Mountain Creek.

In the 1980s, Vernon Township experienced rapid growth and development. New residential developments and commercial centers were built, transforming the township from a rural farming community to a suburban area. Today, Vernon Township is home to approximately 24,000 residents and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, including skiing, hiking, and golfing.
