History of Goshen, NY

Goshen is a town located in Orange County, New York, in the United States. The area was settled by Europeans in 1714 however plans for this  began in 1654. The town was established in 1788 after the end of the Revolutionary War and New York became a state.

During the American Revolution, it served as a strategic location for the Continental Army; many of its residents fought in the war. In 1777, General George Washington stopped in Goshen to chat with children at the old stone schoolhouse (near the quarry) on his way to Newburgh, NY.  

Goshen became the county seat of Orange County in 1801, and the village grew as a center of commerce and government. In 1783, during the end of the Revolution,  competitors raced horses along the roads. In the 19th century, the town became known for its harness racing industry and it hosted many important races. The  Goshen Historic Track opened in 1838 and is the oldest half-mile track in the world; still in operation today.

During the 20th century, the town continued to grow and modernize, while also preserving its historic character. The village is home to many historic buildings and landmarks, including the 1841 Orange County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Goshen is a thriving community with a population of approximately 14,571 people. It is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including the nearby Appalachian Trail and the Wallkill River, as well as its rich history and vibrant cultural scene.
