Vanessa Wight is bringing her knowledge and experience to Better Home and Gardens Real Estate Green Team!
Vanessa grew up in the service industry. Her parents owned a seasonal retail business in a small town in Western New York that relied heavily on tourism. As soon as she was old enough Vanessa spent her summers helping lifelong, repeat customers with their swimsuit and specialty gift purchases.
She cut her teeth working behind that cash register and quickly learned of her desire to work in the service industry. Her parents always coached her on the link between good service and building a successful business. Thanks to these lessons Vanessa always takes time to prioritize providing good customer care.
With this experience to guide her, Vanessa went on to become a sociologist. Throughout her nearly two-decade career, she researched and published on a range of work-family topics, with a specific focus on children and poverty. She spent the bulk of this career analyzing large, nationally-representative data sets to examine and address questions about early childhood experiences and outcomes later in life.
Vanessa married her husband Nick Curabba, 25 years ago and in 2000 they purchased their first home in Kensington, MD. It was an original Sears Roebuck and Co. house that you could purchase from a catalog. She fell in love with the glass door knobs throughout the home and with house hunting in general.
After 15 years and two homes in the Washington, DC area Vanessa and her husband decided it was time to move back to New York. They had just had their daughter and realized they didn’t want to raise their children so far away from their family. They chose to buy their next home in Hastings on Hudson since, at the time, she and her husband both worked in NYC. However, after several years Vanessa left her career to become a stay-at-home mom. Her family soon decided to move to the Middletown, New York area. Her husband had grown up here and they would be able to live within minutes of his parent’s home.
Loving the Life She Lives
It has been 10 years since they purchased their home in the Town of Mt. Hope and they have enjoyed every second of it. Vanessa, her husband, and their two children, a daughter aged 14 and a son aged 12, never have a dull moment. Their home quickly earned the title of “The Wild Kingdom” as they cohabit with a dog, cat, bearded dragon, 10-20 chickens (depending on the fox in their neighborhood), and a horse!
Vanessa loves to stay involved with her children’s schools. Both kids attend the Minisink Valley Central School district and Vanessa has been an active member of the PTO for many years. In addition, she has served in multiple roles at both the building and executive board levels. She currently is chair of the middle school’s PTO and also serves on MVCSD’s Board of Education.
Family is very important to Vanessa and she always takes time to make meaningful memories with her children and husband. Family board games and hiking along with horse riding, running, and reading are a few of the ways Vanessa fills her time.
Discovering Her Forever Career
Vanessa knew that after four real estate transactions and a couple of different states, they had found their forever home. After nearly 20 years of buying and selling their own homes, Vanessa discovered the passion she had for real estate. Throughout the years she had made househunting her “unofficial” official part-time job and pastime. Thanks to her husband’s father being a broker with a well-established brokerage in the Middletown, NY area, real estate was always a common topic in their home. Very soon she realized that Real Estate was her forever career and it was time to officially begin her newest adventure.
Vanessa obtained her Real Estate license in January 2021 and immediately hit the ground running. The love for data she gained while working as a sociologist gives her a huge advantage in analyzing and understanding local trends in the housing market. Additionally, her years of customer service experience make it so she is capable of giving each of her clients the best possible service. Vanessa is always learning about and following the latest decorating trends. She implements this knowledge with all of her clients who need help decorating, staging, or remodeling.
After spending nearly two years working for another agency Vanessa found her newest home at BHGRE Green Team. Our mission of building a successful business while maintaining a meaningful life resonated with her. We are so happy that she has joined our team and we look forward to supporting her business every step of the way.
